PARTNER FILE / #011 · KANTO

Metapod

CommonBug

Metapod opens with Bug Bite, with 92 base HP and 55 defense. Its special attack factor is slightly higher than its physical factor, so its default attack and stronger stat do not line up.

Physical and special attacks use different attack factors. Defense and special defense affect the matching incoming damage category; they are not flat percentages of damage blocked. Speed is the game’s base movement value.

Your opening move

DEFAULT LOADOUT

Bug Bite

Bug · physical · Melee

A quick bite in a short arc.

The 400-coin Starting move upgrade is bought separately for each partner. It lets you choose a legal non-buff opening; the default remains available. Learning another attack during a run does not automatically change the active slot.

As a single-type Bug partner, Metapod gets ×1.20 damage on damaging Bug moves. Normal alternatives and buffs do not inherit that bonus.

Choosing your cards

WHAT TO CHECK FIRST
  • Bug Bite remains a physical opening. If you unlock a different start, compare legal special Bug attacks rather than assuming the default always fits best.
  • Its 91 speed is lower than Caterpie’s 97. Give yourself an exit lane before enemies surround you.

Move evolutions below upgrade an attack. They do not mean this partner changes into another Pokémon. For upgrade rules and slot choices, read the move evolution guide.

How strong is Metapod?

A deliberate pick for players who enjoy the constraint

Metapod can follow a clear single-type Bug plan, but we would not choose it for movement comfort. At 91 speed, it is the slowest of these first 16 partners.

Its special factor is only slightly higher than physical. Paying 400 coins to change the start is not automatically better than developing Bug Bite while learning spacing.

ONE MAIN ROUTE FIRST

These are priorities and alternatives, not three attacks you receive or fire together. The selected slot keeps casting; existing projectiles, placed fields and temporary buffs can remain after switching. Bonds let several moves keep casting from one selected group.

A buff cast adds a stack rather than instantly granting the maximum bonus. Refresh it, return to damage before it expires, or combine it with damage in a Bond. It affects your player, not the whole team. Do not pass up a useful damage upgrade just to complete this list.

Default route

Bug Bite

physical · Bug

Keep the free physical opening for a direct Power evolution goal.

X-ScissorLv. 5 Bug Bite + Power

Optional special pivot

Signal Beam

special · Bug

Bouncing projectiles offer another pattern with the slightly stronger factor. Power supports this evolution too.

MegahornLv. 5 Signal Beam + Power

Approach control

String Shot

physical · Bug

The slowing trap can organize space. Select the move to lay more traps, or bond it with damage; already placed traps remain until they trigger or expire.

Sticky WebLv. 5 String Shot + Reflexes

Upgrade order

  1. Choose the physical default or an already-unlocked special start before taking category buffs.
  2. Build the chosen attack and its evolution requirement.
  3. Use control and movement upgrades when the route closes; another attack does not increase movement speed.

If the cards do not cooperate: Stay with upgraded Bug Bite if Signal Beam is late. Bug Buzz is special, but its surrounding aura still requires careful nearby spacing.

Who we would pair with Metapod

CO-OP PAIRINGS TO TRY

We would pair Metapod with a teammate willing to maintain a clear, manageable retreat path. That is movement discipline, not a hidden defensive bonus.

Wartortle can choose slow. Follow a common route rather than expect Metapod to chase a faster partner.

Charmeleon gives ranged damage. Agree on the next direction early to avoid last-second turns through enemies.

Kanto pairings to try, not an all-roster co-op ranking or a tested best team. Each player manages their own active slot and buffs. A partner knowing a move does not mean it keeps casting throughout the run.

Small decisions that help

POSITION · SWITCH · UPGRADE
  1. Turn early

At 91 base speed, waiting for the gap to close is a poor test. Choose the next lane while it remains open.

  2. Compare levels before pivoting

The 0.84 special versus 0.81 physical gap is small. Existing upgrades can matter more.

  3. Keep protection personal

Harden is a personal defense buff. It does not give a teammate shared protection.

These are the cards this partner can learn, including its default attack. They are choices, not a loadout you receive at once. An evolution requires the base move at its maximum level and the listed stat card; attack names alone do not imply extra effects such as healing.
